I started to blog in English about one month ago and I must say, that I am more than happy with the result. The traffic on this blog increased significantly and I am now reaching with my ideas and thoughts much more people than before.
Four weeks later about 64% of the unique visitors still come from German speaking countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) and already 36% come from all over the world in the following order:
- US
- UK
- South Africa
- Italy
- France
- Canada
- New Zealand
- Spain
- Japan
- Netherlands
I am not 100% sure, but it occurs to me that the number of people, who unsubscribed my blog, due to the recent language change, is really really low. Even German readers start to comment in English and I am really happy with that.
The reason for this change was the fact, that the whole business I am working in and the whole conversation about the topics I am specialized in (virtual worlds, social media, semantic web) is a global one, with news, ideas and opinions from all over the world.
If you then blog in German only you are not part of this global conversation and not being part of a conversation is not what I want.
So I hope to steadily improve my English writing skills and that this growth in other countries will continue over the next months. If you have any feedback regarding the language change, please let me know!

Personally…I never read the blog in German, it was only until you started blogging in English that I became aware of your site. So…personally, I love it!
I live in Vienna and speak a moderate amount of German, but do all of my work, for both an Austrian company, and 2 in America in English, and so…I think you’re right on the money here when you say that by writing in German only, you’re cutting yourself out of the conversation.
Congrats on the switch, and for the record…your English is amazing! Much better than my written German.
Viel Spaß und Servus aus Österreich!
