After I have written the post The South African Blogosphere I got a lot of positive feedback from German readers, who were quite interested in the SA blogosphere and who would like to learn more about it.
Therefore I started to send out questions to a few SA bloggers via email, but Simone came up with the excellent idea to do this public and to ask this way every SA blogger, who would like to contribute. [Read more →]

I started to blog in English about one month ago and I must say, that I am more than happy with the result. The traffic on this blog increased significantly and I am now reaching with my ideas and thoughts much more people than before.
Four weeks later about 64% of the unique visitors still come from German speaking countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) and already 36% come from all over the world in the following order:
- US
- UK
- South Africa
- Italy
- France
- Canada
- New Zealand
- Spain
- Japan
- Netherlands
I am not 100% sure, but it occurs to me that the number of people, who unsubscribed my blog, due to the recent language change, is really really low. Even German readers start to comment in English and I am really happy with that.
The reason for this change was the fact, that the whole business I am working in and the whole conversation about the topics I am specialized in (virtual worlds, social media, semantic web) is a global one, with news, ideas and opinions from all over the world.
If you then blog in German only you are not part of this global conversation and not being part of a conversation is not what I want.
So I hope to steadily improve my English writing skills and that this growth in other countries will continue over the next months. If you have any feedback regarding the language change, please let me know!

As many people I’ve started to use Tweetdeck yesterday and I must say that it really makes my life easier and I wish I would have this interface also for FriendFeed. Why? [Read more →]

[GERMAN] Short notice for english speaking visitors:
This podcast and blog post is in German. In this episode I talked about blog communities and what features I am still missing. I compare MyBlogLog, Blog Networks on Facebook and Six Groups with each other

This podcast and blog post is in German. But it’s basically about the same thing, I have just blogged in english here.

I was just thinking about new advertising channels in the age of social media and I am asking myself, how long it will take, until we will see “lifestream marketing”. In the realm of social commerce are so many activities focused on creating tools and platforms to enable consumers to recommend products to others, that it would only make sense to also be part of this whole activity / lifestream development.
As I have pointed out in my podcast episode about FriendFeed (it’s in German, sorry) I am convinced that the concept behind FriendFeed will be a mass phenomenon and maybe it will even become one of the most important new channels for marketers, because it’s the closest digital equivalent to a real-life recommendation.
Simple example: Amazon could you please offer me a RSS feed, which has a list of all books I bought, reviewed and of course looked at for a longer time, which I can integrate in Facebook and FriendFeed (of course with the partner ID included) to recommend them to my friends?
Isn’t that the most realistic “social commerce” scenario, we can think about right now? I just did a search on the popular German blog Exciting Commerce and couldn’t find an entry about lifestreaming or something similar.
Well - my recommendation for today: build tools that enable us to stream our product related online behavior via RSS in different channels. Still geeky, but I am sure, that will change soon and especially the Amazon example convince me, that there would be quite a lot of people, who would integrate such streams in Facebook, FriendFeed and Co.

[GERMAN] Short notice for english speaking visitors:
this podcast and blog post is in German. I talked to Kosmar at the opening party of the EAT workspace about EAT, FriendFeed, Swurl, identi.ca, Google and a bunch of other stuff.

I have talked recently to quite a few makers of virtual worlds and most of them don’t have the topic “data portability” really on their agenda, yet. A few of them even see it as a big threat to their business model. But let me explain, why they should care about data portability from the very beginning. [Read more →]

[ENGLISH] The Business Class.Net (BCN) is a network of co-working places all around the world and I did a short interview today with Manu Kumar, CEO of the BCN. The reason why is that actually I work by myself in the BCN hub in Berlin and always wanted to publish something about it.
It’s not only a very nice place to work in Berlin, where you can easily rent a desk per day/week/month and can get started in the moment where you arrive - Manu calls it a “plug and play office” - but it’s also a nice way to connect with other people.
If you want to learn more about it, listen to the podcast, visit their website and of course feel free to ask any questions in the comments.

When somebody will ask me in a few years, what it was like to be on social networks sites like MySpace and Facebook in the early days, the first thing which would come into my mind is:
they had ridiculous bad user interfaces and it was a real mess to use them - but everybody was there.
The whole social media boom of the last years has pointed out an interesting thing: people use the platforms where their friends are and not the platforms which have the best set of design, features and usability. But I am sure that this connection will break up soon. [Read more →]
